Let’s get our kids moving!

Here is a great video from University of Michigan that shows how we can work on some basic gross motor skills in ways that engage your child through play but also work towards improving motor skills and development.

Occupational therapist, Emma Hubbard tells you all about common toys that you use that could be limiting development during childhood. Note: These toys aren’t inherently bad, if you need to use these toys just try to do so in moderation, especially if it’s something that your child enjoys.

Nicole has been an occupational therapist for around 20 years and is sharing her tips and tricks to work on fine motor skills at home!

While some toys may be limiting towards development there are actually some great toys you can incorporate into your child’s collection to help improve development at home.

Independence can make a large difference!

While it may be tougher to do as a parent, letting your child perform independent activities can help them in the long term. If you let your child pour their own drinks, hold their own utensils, set the table, etc. you can allow them to learn how to adapt their motor skills to fit specific tasks and create different motor patterns within their brain that they will store and use for other motor tasks in the future. While dependence may be hard to give up in a sense, it can be very beneficial for your child to try and fail and learn the correct way to perform certain tasks.
