You are a key player in your child’s development! While yes, your child’s physician is probably more knowledgeable on development and early intervention for their patients, you as a parent see your child far more than they do. If you notice something off, it may be smart to keep an eye out on it and talk to your doctor about what you are noticing. Most of the screening methods used are questionnaires or surveys that the caregiver will fill out. Trust yourself and know that you know if something is out of the ordinary. It never hurts to ask questions or make an appointment with your physician to look into developmental testing/screenings.

Tools for Success

  • If you notice something isn’t quite right as your child develops, take note. For example, if they seem to be delayed in walking watch if they are playing standing up, are they using assisted walking toys, etc. Start to make a list to bring to your physician so they get a larger story.

  • Doing research is probably what allowed you to arrive to this site but it’s always ok to look into things and learn more about what to look out for. Try to find reliable sources from medical institutions, research that has been performed, etc. and try to stay away from generative AI as sometimes they don’t have the best sources for the information it is giving you.

  • Your child most likely cannot advocate for themselves! It’s important to notice changes or delays and act on them. Positive change can be made the earlier any delays are noticed!
